I wrote letters, I called our representatives, and I spoke with friends, attempted to educate whenever possible, and I am in complete agreement with chairman Wiggins. Everyone who sees this as a threat to our beautiful state needs to educate themselves about this issue, and become involved. This may not be in your vicinity right now, but it will be coming to a wet land near you in the not too distant future. Speak up, write letters, voice your opinion or we will will see open pools of bright orange water tainted with arsenic, lead and mercury. This is the water we drink, the water we swim and fish in. It is important.

New mining panel sets meeting dates

By Lee Bergquist of the Journal Sentinel Sept. 1, 2012 5:52 p.m.

Sen. Tim Cullen (D-Janesville) announced the dates for three information hearings on mining legislation as the Legislature takes its latest stab at reviewing regulations related to iron ore mining,

The committee meetings will be Sept. 18, Sept. 20 and Sept. 25 in Room 411 at the Capitol. Speakers will include a Department of Natural Resources official, and experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Wisconsin Geological Survey. Also invited are those who supported and opposed mining legislation that failed to pass the Legislature earlier this year.

In a statement, Cullen said that the committee will not work from bills from the most recent legislative session, but will focus on the state’s current mining laws and what changes are needed.

Mining legislation passed the Assembly, but failed by a single vote in March in the Senate.

The collapse of mining legislation prompted Gogebic Taconite, a Hurley-based unit of Florida-based Cline Group, to abandon plans to construct a massive open pit mine on a ridge spanning Ashland and Iron counties.

There are Democratic members of the panel, but no Republicans have been named yet.
